Add a Sighting in the Sightings Explorer

In the tool strip to the left of the map screen you will see this button:

MapAddSightingButton

This button can be used to add a sighting at a specific location on the map.  To add a sighting, click this button, then click a location on the map.  You will see the "Add Sighting" dialog box appear.

The Add Sighting/Outing Dialog box is very similar to the Sightings Editor and works almost identically.  The one difference is that this dialog is specifically for adding new sightings.  Editing and navigating old sightings is not possible.  To to that, use the Sightings Editor.

MapAddSightingDialog

The Outings and Sightings Log is the main area where you enter your outing and sighting information.  The outings log contains the location, date, and outing-specific information.

The Sightings Log is essentially the list of birds that was seen at that particular location on that specific day.

MapAddSightingDialogMarkup

The position for the add sighting dialog is automatically retrieved based on the location you clicked on the map.  You see the location you chose from the latitude/longitude box or the UTM coordinates.  Additionally, the software searches your list of standard locations for a nearby location.  If it finds one close enough, it will automatically place it in the region, location, and sub-location category boxes.

To enter sightings, begin typing quantities and common names (or band codes) in the sightings log.

BirdList_Partial

On the right-hand side of the screen in the sightings editor is the Bird List.  Although entering birds using band codes is the quickest way to enter sightings, you can also enter the common name in the bird log.  When doing it this way, the bird list will dynamically update to match the first few letters of the common name.  You can then double-click the bird in the bird list to quickly add it to the sightings log.
