Treating Neck Pain Through Simple Exercises

There are plenty of people seeking for neck pain treatment especially adults. When one ages, one experiences more pains in the neck. The reason behind this is the degeneration of the vertebrae in the cervical area which occurs usually when people age. This illness is typically the result of decades and years spend holding up ones head which weighs about 8 to 10 pounds. This weight is equivalent to a bowling ball taken out from your tiny neck bone.

There are considerably large numbers of people who will develop degenerating vertebrae and some of them will develop cervical arthritis. There was a random, controlled study conducted at Punkaharju Rehabilitation Center in Finland which revealed the efficacy of strength training of the neck as compared with no exercise at all or just simple stretching. The participants of the study were 180 women who were aged 25 to 53 and who went to offices and often experienced chronic pain in the neck.

The result of the study showed that the strength training exercises of the neck worked best in relieving the pain. At least three quarters of the women reported a complete or considerable relief in pain. A year after the study was conducted the improved neck strength of the women remained and their ability to be able to readily look up, down and sideways was likewise greatly improved- about 10 times better than in those in the control group.

Previously, the emphasis was given on stretching exercises but in the study that was conducted in Finland, it revealed that their efficacy alone is not contributing in easing or alleviating the neck pain. The lead researcher of the group, Jari Ylinen, said that stretching alone is not enough but has to be combined with muscle exercises of the neck and shoulders.
